The George L. Collins Papers consist of papers, publications, sound recordings, photographs and maps documenting Collins' career with the National Park Service, the work of his private consulting firm, Conservation Associates, and his role as vice-president of the Arctic International Wildlife Range Society. The bulk of the materials date from 1950-1984. The correspondence, in particular, reflects the vast network of communications Collins helped foster and documents his success in diffusing tension between groups representing different interests. Correspondence includes letters from conservation leaders such as Olaus and Margaret Murie, Celia Hunter and Robert Weeden as well as from Secretary of the Interior Rogers Morton, various National Park officials, and representatives from oil and gas companies.

George LeRoy Collins was born May 31, 1903 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He attended school in California and became a National Park ranger in 1930. In 1950, Collins began work on the Alaska Recreational Survey for the National Park Service. During this period Collins came to realize the value of the area that is now the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, an area that remained of interest for Collins for the rest of his professional life.
